FirstOntario Credit Union: Launching the Everlink Debit Mastercard

FirstOntario Credit Union is one of Canada’s largest credit unions, with $7.9 billion in assets under management and members across the Golden Horseshoe, Niagara, and Southwestern Ontario. As post-pandemic consumer habits accelerated demand for digital payment flexibility, FirstOntario engaged 2Oaks Consulting to manage the end-to-end rollout of a new Everlink Debit Mastercard and fraud monitoring solution.

Outcomes

On Time, On Budget Full implementation delivered within planned timeline and budget
Card Consolidation In-person and online purchases unified on a single debit card, reducing member reliance on credit
New Revenue Additional income through online and cross-border transaction fees and Everlink's Optional Issuer Fee
Enhanced Security Mastercard Zero Liability Protection and Everlink eDetect fraud monitoring deployed for all cardholders
Multi-Vendor Delivery Five external partners coordinated alongside multiple internal departments through a single program management layer

The challenge

Member expectations had shifted. More purchases were moving online, cross-border transactions were becoming routine, and members increasingly needed a single card that could work at point-of-sale terminals, ATMs, and e-commerce checkouts. FirstOntario's existing debit card program could not support these needs.

At the same time, the credit union was managing several concurrent strategic initiatives, and the card implementation required coordination across five external vendors (Servus, Central1, Temenos, Everlink, and Mastercard) and multiple internal departments.

The approach

2Oaks led the project from scoping through launch, defining the program plan, assigning deliverables across stakeholders, establishing governance at all levels, and overseeing contractual agreements with each vendor. By managing this coordination centrally, 2Oaks freed FirstOntario's internal teams to continue work on other priorities without compromising the card launch timeline.

The rollout introduced new card designs, including co-branded Hamilton TigerCats cards, and deployed Everlink's eDetect fraud monitoring alongside the Mastercard Zero Liability Protection framework.

The impact

The launch gave FirstOntario's members access to a modern debit card that works across in-person, online, and international transactions, with fraud protection that was not previously available.

New revenue streams from cross-border and e-commerce fees strengthened the business case, while the co-branded TigerCats card reinforced FirstOntario's identity as a community-rooted financial institution.
